Picture this: narrow streets lined with golden limestone buildings, vibrant blue waters sparkling in the sun, and a city that feels like it’s been plucked straight from a history book. That’s Valletta, Malta’s capital—and one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.
When we visited, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Sure, I’d heard about Malta’s history and beautiful coastline, but Valletta itself? I hadn’t heard much buzz. Now, after spending time there, I can confidently say that Valletta is Europe’s most underrated capital. We had an unforgettable time, and I’m here to tell you why this little gem deserves a spot on your travel bucket list.
A City Steeped in History
Walking through Valletta feels like stepping into a different era. The city was built by the Knights of St. John in the 1500s, and their legacy is everywhere—from the imposing city walls to the ornate churches. One of the highlights of our trip was visiting St. John’s Co-Cathedral. From the outside, it looks simple, almost austere. But inside? Wow. The interior is dripping with gold, intricate marble floors, and artwork that stopped us in our tracks—especially Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.
And then there’s Upper Barrakka Gardens. Standing there, overlooking the Grand Harbour, we were struck by how peaceful and beautiful it was. Watching the cannons fire during the midday salute with that stunning view in the background? Definitely one of those “I can’t believe I’m here” moments.
Maltese Cuisine: A Feast for the Senses
If you’re a foodie, Valletta will steal your heart. The city’s culinary scene is a reflection of Malta’s unique position at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. We indulged in everything from fresh seafood to hearty stews, but one dish stood out: rabbit ravioli. Yes, rabbit! It’s a Maltese specialty, and the ravioli we tried was rich, flavorful, and unlike anything I’ve tasted before.
Maltese cuisine blends influences from Italy, North Africa, and the Middle East, so every meal felt like a cultural adventure. We’d sit down at a local spot, order something unfamiliar, and be blown away by the flavors.
Why Valletta Deserves More Love
Valletta isn’t flashy, and that’s part of its charm. It’s a city where you can slow down, take in the sights, and really connect with the local culture. There’s no rush, no overwhelming crowds—just beautiful streets, welcoming people, and incredible food.
We left Valletta feeling refreshed, inspired, and a little sad to say goodbye. It’s a place that sneaks up on you, weaving itself into your heart with its charm and authenticity.
